At least 111 people have been killed in a major earthquake in northwest China.
As state news agency Xinhua reported, 220 injuries were initially reported after the 6.2 magnitude earthquake late Monday night. These initial numbers are likely to increase as search and rescue forces advance.
Two provinces affected
At least 100 people were killed in Jishishan county of Gansu province. Neighboring Qinghai province initially reported eleven deaths. Chinese state and party leader Xi Jinping (70) called for every effort to save people.
The last major earthquake in China with many deaths occurred last year, when more than 60 people died in the southwest of the country. In 2008, Sichuan province was hit by a massive earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, killing more than 80,000 people. (SDA)
