American billionaire Elon Musk struck anti-immigration notes during an appearance at a festival for Italian right-wing populists. Immigration is not a solution to the declining birth rate in industrialized countries, the South African resident said.
Musk appeared on stage at the Atreyu festival, organized by Italy’s largest ruling party, Fratelli d’Italia, on Saturday with one of his 11 children in his arms. In the speech, Musk referred to the example of China, which will lose 40 percent of its population in the coming years. “My advice to all government leaders and people is: make sure you have children to create a new generation,” Musk said. Otherwise there is a danger that “the culture of Italy, Japan and France will disappear”.
“I am in favor of legal immigration, which should be increased, while illegal immigration should be stopped. You should welcome those who are honest, want to be part of the culture and work hard. I am not saying that all illegal immigrants are criminals, most of them are honest, there must be an immigration procedure,” the entrepreneur said in his speech. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was among his audience.
Guests included British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Albanian counterpart Edi Rama. Meloni recently signed an agreement with Rama under which Italy will build and operate two migrant centers on Albanian territory.
The Atreyu Festival, which has been taking place since 1998, is named after the main character from Michael Ende’s fantasy book ‘The Neverending Story’. Right-wing politicians discuss society, politics and the economy. It takes place in the ancient Roman fortress of Castel Sant’Angelo, near the Vatican. (sda/apa)
