The former private lawyer of former US President Donald Trump (77), Rudy Giuliani (79), has been ordered to pay $148 million in damages for defamation.
The verdict was announced on Friday, according to US media, after two election workers sued Giuliani over a video in which he falsely accused them of voter fraud after the November 2020 presidential election.
Giuliani, an ally of former President Donald Trump, claimed after the election that aides like her were throwing out ballots for Trump and counting fake stubs for Democrat Joe Biden. Moss and her mother were targeted by Trump supporters for appearing in a video that was being circulated.
Women suffer from slander
Giuliani must therefore pay both plaintiffs almost $37 million each for defamation and its psychological impact on the women, as well as $75 million in damages.
They reported that they suffered greatly from the slander. Election worker Wandrea “Shaye” Moss told the court she rarely leaves her home, suffers from panic attacks and struggles with nightmares caused by the barrage of threats and racist messages.
Moss said she was a cheerful and outgoing person before Giuliani’s attacks, but has since been stuck in a lonely cycle of crying spells and nightmares. “Most days I pray that God doesn’t wake me up and that I just disappear.”
