Initially, nothing was known about the background of the crime. According to consistent media reports, the deputy belongs to the presidential party Servant of the People. The SBU secret service began investigations, including terrorism.

Since fighting broke out between Moscow-backed eastern Ukrainian separatists and the army in the spring of 2014, numerous weapons have been in circulation in the Eastern European country.
