Tragic accident in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany: a man (†57) fled from a police checkpoint in Querfurt. He drove onto the A38 as a wrong-way driver and crashed into a car. Three people were killed and another man was seriously injured.
Officials wanted to check the driver in the Stassfurt area. The man fled and initially drove onto Autobahn 14 towards Halle, sometimes at too high a speed. The police gave chase.
The police tried to warn other drivers
The driver then changed course and drove through the western district of Saale to the Rothenschirmbach junction and then, in the opposite direction, onto the A38 motorway towards Göttingen. In total, the escape stretched almost 80 kilometers, as “Bild” reports.
The police warned the drivers about the wrong-way driver via the radio. “Between Eisleben and Schafstädt: Attention, a wrong-way driver is approaching, do not overtake, be careful on both lanes.” This warning came too late for the driver of a Mercedes-Benz.
The motive for the escape is unclear
The wrong-way driver collided with the Mercedes at around 4:25 am. The driver and passenger died on the spot, and the wrong-way driver also did not survive the collision. A man who was also in the Mercedes was flown to hospital by rescue helicopter with serious injuries.
The road towards Göttingen was also closed on Friday morning because the accident was registered. The circumstances surrounding the exact accident were the subject of further investigation. Where the police followed the car is also being investigated. It is unclear why the man fled from control. (AFP/jwg)
