He wanted to aim high, but now he is dead. Walid R.* (†9)’s big dream was to one day become a professional football player. The boy from the community of Noblejas, about an hour’s drive from Madrid, trained diligently.
That was also the case last Tuesday. Unlike normal, the training ended in tragedy. Suddenly Walid collapsed. Cardiac arrest!
Walid died in hospital
Although the young athlete received immediate medical attention, all help came too late for him: he died a few hours later in hospital. His club and the city’s football school made this known in a joint announcement on X.
“We regret that today we have to announce the death of our student, colleague and friend, nine-year-old Walid,” the letter said.
Despite the efforts of the football school supervisors, the city sports department employees, the medical supervisors, the Guardia Civil and the city council, the boy did not survive. According to the deputy mayor of Noblejas, Ángel Luengo, the boy may have suffered from a previous illness. Luengo told ABC.
Club suspends training and matches
On behalf of everyone, the club expresses its sincere condolences to the friends and family. “We would like to express our solidarity and affection.” As a sign of solidarity, the club is now suspending training and competitions until after the Christmas holidays.
In addition, a mourning and memorial ceremony for Walid was organized on the training field on Wednesday evening. So his final tribute was paid to him in the place he loved most. (dzc)
