A sinister series of murders and attacks on homeless people shocked Vienna this summer. For months, investigators from the State Criminal Investigation Department have wondered who could be behind these unscrupulous acts. Now it is clear who it was.
Five months after the first case, a teenager (16) turned himself in at a police station in the Austrian capital. The teenager confessed to the crimes shortly afterwards in the presence of his lawyer. “I’m the wanted homeless murderer. “I can no longer reconcile it with my conscience,” the teenager reportedly said, according to the Kronen Zeitung. An “inner urge” made him commit murder, the boy explained during the subsequent interrogation.
Woman barely survives attack
It all started on July 12th. A 56-year-old was found dead on a park bench. His body was covered in stab wounds and lacerations. Ten days later a second murder attempt followed. On July 22, a homeless woman (51) was attacked with a knife in Honiger-Au-Park.
The woman barely survived the attack. The third and final act took place on August 9. The serial perpetrator had his knife with him again. This time he stabbed a sleeping homeless man (†55). The man had no chance and died from his serious injuries.
In the third crime, the perpetrator was filmed by a surveillance camera. The police offered a bounty worth 9,448 francs for useful information.
Kitchen knife as murder weapon
The boy’s stabbing weapon, a 15 centimeter long kitchen knife, has now been confiscated. As the Kronen Zeitung reports, the homeless killer hid the tools of the crime in his father’s sofa.
At the end of August, another dead homeless man was discovered. The man in his forties had been brutally beheaded. A hole the size of a coin was also discovered in his skull. The police were quickly able to rule out an accident. It is currently unclear whether the suspect is also responsible for this murder. (no)
