Liz Truss (47) was British Prime Minister for 45 days. Before then, there was a lot of simmering in government. On Friday, she fired her finance minister, Kwasi Kwarteng (47). Interior Minister Suella Braverman (42) followed this week.
Truss told media: “I have spoken to His Majesty the King to inform him that I am resigning as party leader.”
She wants to remain as prime minister until a successor is found. And that should be within a week. Normally, the leader of the ruling party would also be prime minister.
But who has the best chance? Blick shows the possible successors.
Rishi Sunak
Former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak (42) is England’s favorite to succeed Liz Truss. He was Chancellor of the Exchequer from February 2020 to July 1, 2022 and came second in the last election as the new leader of the Conservative Party – behind Liz Truss.
Sunak warned early on about the planned mini-budget, which has plunged Britain’s financial budget into chaos in recent days. The failed financial plan is now also the main reason for Liz Truss’ resignation.
According to experts, Sunak should have the best chance of a successor. However, it is doubted whether he can unite the Conservative party behind him.

Penny Mordaunt
Former Defense Secretary Penny Mordaunt (49) is also considered a good candidate to succeed Liz Truss. Mordaunt has been leader of the House of Commons since September, which gives her an extremely important position in the English political system.
Mordaunt came third in the election as the new leader of the Conservative Party. In July, she called it quits and made way for Liz Truss.
In conservative WhatsApp groups, which have been leaked to Sky News, several MPs have already called on Mordaunt to leave.

Ben Wallace
Defense Secretary and former soldier Ben Wallace (52) campaigned in the spring for Britain to support Ukraine in the current war. That earned him a lot of respect. However, it is completely unclear whether Wallace actually wants to become prime minister. When it came to the successor to Boris Johnson (58) in the summer, Wallace did not show up.
Wallace told the Times on Tuesday that he wants to retain his position as defense secretary. “I want to be defense minister at the end of my term. I love my job and we still have a lot to do.”
Wallace has been Secretary of Defense since 2019.

Boris Johnson
It is known that Boris Johnson (58) did not resign voluntarily in the summer. In his farewell address, Johnson compared himself to the Roman statesman Cincinnatus who fought an invasion before returning to his court. According to tradition, Cincinnatus later returned for a second term.
Some MPs have already openly called on Boris Johnson to return to 10 Downing Street. And he is apparently not averse to a return: the Times and Telegraph newspapers reported this citing unnamed sources. Johnson believes the candidacy is in the “national interest,” according to the Times. According to the Daily Mail, Johnson has not yet made an official statement, he is currently on vacation.

Jeremy Hunt
The most powerful man in the current Truss government is now the new Treasury Secretary, Jeremy Hunt (55). Hunt acknowledged the “mistakes” of the Truss administration on Saturday. “We’ve gone too far too fast.” The new finance minister has reversed almost all previously announced tax breaks. By doing so, he is tearing down the policies that gave Truss the election victory.
Hunt has twice run for the position of Conservative leader. But without success. The 55-year-old brings experience as Minister of Health, Minister of Culture and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
According to information from British Sky News, Hunt has already withdrawn from the race internally and denies a possible candidacy.
