An incident took place in the middle of London on Saturday that sparked outrage. A security guard at a McDonald’s branch on Victoria Street cleared the street in front of the fast food restaurant’s entrance. Apparently he deliberately let water run over a homeless man’s sleeping bag.
Many passers-by reacted in shock. One of them filmed the event. In the video you see how the employee kicks the homeless man’s soaked clothes. In desperation he shouts: ‘Get away from me! I’m not even in front of your store!” The apparently homeless man was sitting in front of a bank branch – next to the McDonald’s branch.
In the video, a second security guard can be seen asking the man filming to turn off his camera. However, he answers: “I can film here and I can stand here.” He is stunned and refers to the McDonald’s employee’s reason: “That’s scandalous, you have to admit that. You know this is wrong!” The employee does not respond to his accusations.
Passersby protect him
Some passers-by can be seen in the background. One of them gives money to the homeless person. Another passerby tells the worker: “Don’t pour water on him, that’s disgusting and completely unheard of.” The homeless man is now visibly shaken and shouts at the guard: “Leave me the fuck alone!” He says in shock to passers-by: “Do you see what he did there?”
Then another McDonald’s employee comes out of the branch. He asks the homeless man why he is causing trouble. The passers-by intervene and protect him. The man behind the camera says: “He’s not causing any problems, his sleeping bag just got wet – and that in winter! That is mean!”
The man who filmed the event then published the video on X. In the post, he addressed the fast food chain directly: “Hello McDonald’s. Do you find it acceptable for your employees to soak the sleeping bags of homeless people in the middle of winter (or any other time of year)? Disgusting behavior. He wasn’t even in front of your store.”
McDonald’s apologizes
McDonald’s responded to the post, which has now been viewed about 3.6 million times. The comment section reads: “We are shocked and saddened by this incident. The external security guards involved have been permanently removed from our restaurants and the restaurant team has been reminded of the importance of treating all people with respect, including vulnerable people – both in the restaurant and in the wider community.”
The fast food chain also wants to “sincerely apologize to the gentleman in the video” and attempt to locate him to “make amends.” (Mrs)
