It should have been a beautiful evening at the Christmas market, but things turned out differently: Saturday morning a fully occupied bus caught fire on the A 20 near Grevesmühlen (D). Within minutes the vehicle was completely burned out. It is a miracle that the 55 passengers were not seriously injured.

The bus was on its way from Stralsund to Lübeck to the Christmas market. Around 9:15 a.m., a passenger noticed it smelled burnt, and not like roasted almonds. When he informed the bus driver, he immediately stopped. Just a few minutes later the bus was engulfed in flames.

Driver inhaled smoke

The bus driver helped the passengers get out of the vehicle. “The 47-year-old man had mild smoke intoxication. He had to be taken to a hospital for further treatment,” Rostock police chief Isabel Wenzel told “Bild”. Two other passengers suffered shock, the rest were unharmed.

The fire brigade tried to extinguish the fire for an hour and a half. The bus burned down completely. This caused material damage of 200,000 euros. It is unclear what caused the fire.

The A 20 was completely closed towards Lübeck. (jwg)
