Hunter Biden (l.) must answer for various tax crimes. Republicans are using his legal troubles to attack his father Joe Biden.

Hunter Biden (53) is accused of failing to properly pay federal taxes for years, the US Department of Justice announced on Thursday evening (local time). In September, the 53-year-old was charged with violating firearms regulations.

The legal blow comes in the middle of the election campaign of his father, who wants to run for a second term as president next year. The suit was filed Thursday in a court in California, where Hunter Biden lives. It accuses him of deliberately not paying his taxes for the years 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 on time, even though he had the necessary resources to do so.

Millions spent on extravagant lifestyles

It was said that he spent millions on an extravagant lifestyle instead of paying his tax bills. The Justice Department mentioned an amount of at least 1.4 million dollars (1.3 million euros) that Hunter Biden withheld.

If convicted, the president’s son could face a prison sentence of up to 17 years, the report said. However, actual penalties for federal crimes are generally lower than the maximum penalties.

The other case

In September, charges were filed against Hunter Biden in the state of Delaware for violating firearms regulations. In the case, he is accused of providing false information when purchasing a gun several years ago and knowingly concealing his drug addiction.

Hunter Biden has long been in the crosshairs of the American justice system. He had been under investigation for years, including possible tax crimes. In June, Delaware prosecutors finally released formal charges against the president’s son for violating gun and tax laws. The Public Prosecution Service initially announced at the time that they had reached an agreement with Hunter Biden to avoid a trial in both cases. However, that deal fell through during a court hearing at the end of July.

In mid-August, US Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special investigator in the case: Prosecutor David Weiss, who had previously investigated, was given additional powers and continued to advance the investigation into Hunter Biden. (SDA)
