Tengelmann boss Karl-Erivan Haub disappeared on April 7, 2018.

On April 7, 2018, Tengelmann heir Karl-Erivan Haub went on a solo ski tour on the Klein Matterhorn. Four days later, the cantonal police announced his disappearance in the glaciers. The chance that the then 58-year-old would be found alive was small. Did Haub have an accident during his adventure?

Police documents support a different theory. According to the files available to “Focus,” officials began investigating the case on April 8 in Zermatt and at the company’s headquarters in Mühlheim. After a week, investigators concluded: there is a 90 percent chance that Haub staged his disappearance – and that he is not dead at all.

The reason for this assumption of the researchers is noticeable inconsistencies. There would also be a motive for Haub’s deliberate disappearance: according to research by RTL, the Tengelmann Group is said to have been in contact with Russian businessmen, who in turn are associated with money laundering. The Russian secret service FSB is also said to have played a role. In November 2020, ‘Bunte’ wrote about this adventurous theory for the first time. But the suspicion is now confirmed by the researchers’ files.

Researchers were put under pressure

An explosive transcript of a conversation appears in the file. Tengelmann’s two private investigators, Alexander Sprich and Leander Buss, met with lawyer Markus Binz in December 2020. He represents Karl-Erivan Haub’s younger brother, Christian Haub. The latter took over the Tengelmann case after the disappearance of his brother. The three speak of a “deliberate discrepancy” with regard to media reporting. False information was deliberately spread, such as the fact that two meters of fresh snow made it virtually impossible to search for the suspected injured person. In fact, at the time of Haub’s disappearance, conditions were perfect for the search.

Sprich and Buss are convinced that you could have seen the traces of a ski trip even with a helicopter. But the search parties found nothing at all. According to “Focus”, Swiss authorities and mountain rescuers were put under pressure near Tengelmann. It is said that they have been warned not to spread any theory other than the accident theory.

Julia Emmler, Haub’s trainer, was surprised by his plans for April 7, 2018. The billionaire has always meticulously prepared for upcoming tours. Haub’s big goal was to patrol the glacier from Zermatt to Verbier – one of the toughest ski touring races in the world. The fact that Haub left spontaneously and alone on April 7 contradicted all rules of common sense in the Alps. Also striking: Haub switched off his smartphone shortly before departure. Emmler told Binz that she never believed in a mountain accident. She also recommended that Haub take a break shortly before the race. He clearly did not follow this recommendation.

But why was Haub in Zermatt in the first place? According to the minutes of the conversation, he actually wanted to fly to France, but the “bad weather” changed his mind. According to the report, the Tengelmann boss informed his pilot of the new destination at short notice.

Did Haub flee to Russia?

Explosive: According to the Tengelmann files, agents of the American secret service CIA and the Russian secret service FSB were in Zermatt shortly after Haub’s disappearance. That’s not all: Veronika E., Haub’s alleged lover, is said to have been hired as a spy for the billionaire. Apparently there are even indications that Haub has a child with E.

It is suspected that Haub’s questionable dealings with Russian businessmen are in danger of being exposed. The CIA is therefore certain that the Tengelmann boss first flew to Italy and then fled to Russia.

However, as Haub was declared dead, the official investigation was halted in May 2021. The Cologne public prosecutor’s office has so far refused to withdraw the death declaration due to a lack of evidence. Christian Haub, on the other hand, told “Focus” in 2021: “I was convinced from the beginning that my brother had been in a fatal accident. So far there has been no motive to go into hiding.” (jwg)
