Deutsche Bahn will be on strike for 24 hours from Thursday evening.

The train drivers’ union GDL has again called for a short-term warning strike at Deutsche Bahn and other railway companies. The strike will start on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. for freight transport and at 10 p.m. for passenger transport and will end on Friday evening at 10 p.m., the union said on Wednesday. She referred mainly to the railways’ refusal to negotiate about working time reductions.

In addition to Deutsche Bahn, the companies Transdev, AKN Eisenbahn, City-Bahn Chemnitz and eight personnel service providers are also on strike, according to GDL information. The union had recently collapsed negotiations with Transdev, which operates regional routes in several states, and negotiations with Deutsche Bahn almost two weeks ago.

Demand a 35-hour work week

The GDL calls for a reduction in weekly working hours from the current 38 hours to 35 hours with full wage compensation. The DB rejected this as not feasible given the shortage of skilled workers. “Companies are not just ignoring the legitimate needs of their own employees,” explains GDL CEO Claus Weselsky. “They also torpedo the urgently needed measures for successful staff recruitment.”

The union also demands 555 euros more wages and an inflation bonus of 3,000 euros for a one-year contract. The railway has so far made an offer that provides for eleven percent more wages and an inflation bonus of up to 2,850 euros – spread over a term of 32 months. At the same time, GDL members are currently voting on more frequent and longer labor disputes.
