Cyclone Michaung has hit the Indian mainland with high winds and heavy rainfall.

At least 12 people have died in rain-related accidents in and around the southeastern metropolis of Chennai, Indian news agency PTI reported on Tuesday, citing local authorities. Thousands of people in coastal areas had previously been moved to temporary shelter for safety.

The large amount of water turned some streets into rivers that washed away vehicles, television images showed. During the rescue work, the helpers used boats and tractors, among other things. The storm is expected to weaken on Wednesday, the Indian Meteorological Department said. Some schools remained closed on Tuesday and fishermen were not allowed to go out to sea. In addition, a number of flights and trains were canceled in the affected areas.

India regularly experiences storms that cause flooding, destruction and power outages. Experts say the risk of severe storms is increasing worldwide due to climate change.
