Software millionaire and hotelier Daniel Langlois died a violent death in Dominica.

Police found a wreck in a ditch on the Caribbean island of Dominica on Friday. The car is completely burned out – and inside two bodies are charred beyond recognition.

After intensive research it becomes clear: it concerns the Canadian hotelier and tech millionaire Daniel Langlois and his partner Dominique Marchand. And it wasn’t an accident: according to police, the couple was killed by a hit man and the car was then set on fire.

The couple own the Coulibri Ridge eco-resort on the island and have been missing there since Friday. Daniel Langlois is the founder of Softimage, a 3D animation software company whose products have been used in films such as Jurassic Park, The Matrix and Titanic. In 1994, he sold the company to Microsoft for $130 million.

Arguing with the neighbors

According to Dominica News Online, four people have already been arrested in connection with the crime. According to the responsible minister, there are three foreigners and one local.

According to Radio Canada, the detainees are an American couple, neighbors of Langlois. This couple apparently had an argument with Langlois and his partner.

Court documents available to Blick show that a dispute broke out over the use of an access road. The couple wanted to prevent guests from using the resort and blocked access with stones and fences. In 2019, the court finally ruled and banned blocking the road.

“Visionary in the field of digital technologies”

It is still unclear whether the neighbors had anything to do with the death. They are currently being questioned by police. Local National Security Minister Rayburn Blackmoore said: “We cannot ignore these types of heinous crimes and their brutality and we cannot allow those responsible to go unpunished.”

Canadian Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge wrote about X: “Daniel Langlois, a visionary in the field of digital technologies and cinema, has left us. His legacy reflects his innovative spirit. My thoughts are with his family members.” (neo)
