Dark smoke rises, an orange glow can be seen through the leaves of the trees: the apartment on the third floor of an apartment building in the Striesen district of Dresden is ablaze. What you don’t see: the tenant (25) desperately trying to escape the flames on the balcony.
But he’s not completely alone: there’s a bed frame chained to his wrist. Seeing no other way out, he first hoists the metal frame over the railing. Then he jumps to the balcony one floor below. A video of the dramatic scene is currently circulating on the internet.
Girlfriend sets fire and escapes
Road builders meanwhile discovered the fire and warned residents. At the same time, several emergency calls were received by the fire brigade. On November 16 around 8:43 a.m., 49 firefighters responded to the social building, as “Bild” reported.
According to the German newspaper, a 25-year-old lived with his partner (19) and their child in the burned-out apartment on the third floor. This person would not have been in the apartment when the fire broke out. His mother, on the other hand, fled the house after the arson.
Police were able to arrest the young woman around noon. She is being investigated for attempted murder. Her boyfriend was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Known to the police
The young mother was brought before the Dresden court judge on Friday morning and taken to the women’s prison in Chemnitz. There were already several terminated juvenile criminal cases against the woman for minor crimes, including theft, embezzlement and fare evasion.
It is not known whether she became violent towards her partner. However, a resident reported to the newspaper ‘Bild’: “The young man already had serious burns on his face and was wearing a head bandage. He still took the young woman inside.”
Apartment building uninhabitable
It also remains unclear whether an argument preceded the fire. According to the newspaper, the couple had an argument over custody of their child.
All tenants of the apartment complex were housed in replacement apartments. The house, which contains several temporary social services apartments, is currently uninhabitable. (gs)
