Worrying news from the Pentagon: The US Department of Defense announced on Sunday that one of its warships was attacked in the Red Sea. There were also attacks on several merchant ships. “We are aware of reports of attacks on the USS Carney and merchant ships in the Red Sea and will provide information as it becomes available,” the Pentagon said. According to the Pentagon, it is unclear who carried out the attack.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for the attack in a letter, but the contents were incorrect. The rebels say they have attacked Israeli ships. There is no mention of an attack on the USS Carney. There has been no confirmation from the Pentagon whether it was actually the rebels.
British also report an attack
The British military previously said there was likely a drone attack and explosions in the Red Sea. The British agency UKMTO (United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations), which is run by the British Royal Navy, said it had “received a report of unmanned aerial system (drone) activity, including a possible explosion from the direction of Yemen.”
The incidents took place amid heightened tensions in the Red Sea and surrounding waters after Iran-backed Houthi rebels hijacked an Israel-linked cargo ship, the Galaxy Leader, last month. Yemen’s Houthi rebels have carried out a series of attacks on ships in the Red Sea in recent weeks and fired drones and missiles at Israel, which is waging a war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
