After seven days of ceasefire, the Gaza Strip is again under heavy Israeli fire, and just minutes after the end of the ceasefire there were also rocket alarms in Israel. Current images from the coastal strip show similar scenes to a week ago: deaths, injuries, chaos, destruction. At least 70 Palestinians were killed in the first hours after the resumption of fighting, according to Gaza’s health authority. Several buildings were destroyed. Palestinian journalists and influencers report explosions in the Gaza Strip.
The fact that Israel is attacking with full force comes as no surprise. Even before the end of the ceasefire, both the military and government stated that Israel would attack again after the release of some hostages. Opposition politician Benny Gantz (64) warned on Tuesday: “We are preparing for the next phases of the war and for the expansion of the maneuver to the entire Gaza Strip.”
New evacuation map published
An interactive map published by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) shows that the entire Gaza Strip is now part of the offensive. The entire coastal strip was divided into hundreds of numbered “evacuation zones”. According to the IDF, the blocks correspond to ‘recognized districts’. Gaza residents must find out which number their residential area falls under in order to “evacuate certain places if this is necessary for security reasons.” In the future, the IDF wants to communicate when and where evacuations should take place through “various media.” There have been no reports so far.
According to the IDF, the card is intended to take “all possible precautions” to “prevent loss of life or injury to the civilian population.” The map was published on an Arab IDF website. Leaflets from the map were also said to have been dropped over the coastal area.
Heavy shelling in the south
The army also distributed leaflets urging the evacuation of several areas near the southern city of Khan Yunis. It reads: “To the residents of Al-Qarara, Khuza’a, Abasan and Bani Suhaila. They should be evacuated immediately and taken to emergency shelters in the city of Rafah. The city of Khan Yunis is a dangerous battle zone.”
According to broadcaster Al Jazeera, several people have been killed in the area around Khan Yunis since Friday morning. A residential building in the Hamad neighborhood was reportedly hit by an Israeli airstrike. Video verified by the BBC shows several civilians running away. According to media reports, Israeli bombs also hit a residential building in Rafah, near the Egyptian border. Photos show a large cloud of smoke.
Military personnel are also active in the north
The offensive is also progressing in northern Gaza. According to Hamas, a residential building in the Dchabalia refugee camp was destroyed, after which a “major fire” broke out. Confirmation from Israel is still pending. However, before the ceasefire, numerous military operations had already taken place in Jabalia, as the IDF suspected Hamas facilities there.
Dozens of people are said to have been killed in the northern districts of Shujayea, Zeitoun and Beit Lahiya, Al Jazeera reports. In addition, photos from the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza show a pile of rubble. A well there was reportedly damaged in an Israeli attack on Friday.
Hospitals overwhelmed
In addition to the dead, there were also a number of injured, according to the Hamas-controlled health authority in Gaza. Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra explains that doctors are currently struggling with the “large number” of injured people. With only a few hospitals still operational due to the previous bombings, those that are still in operation have been completely overwhelmed. “Due to the flow of patients, the injured are lying on the floor in emergency rooms and in front of operating rooms,” al-Qudra said.
