Fire in German refugee shelter is controlled

As a police spokesman said on Thursday, firefighters had to let the large thatched building burn down in a controlled manner until morning. According to the district, 14 refugees still lived in the former hotel and were received by three employees. No one was injured.

The suspicion of arson is currently being investigated. When the expert can enter the fire ruins in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania depends on the stability of the ruins, it said. On Monday, police received a report of a swastika scribble at the entrance, the culprit of which could not yet be found. Police said it was not immediately clear whether the fire was connected.

The fire broke out on Wednesday evening. A fire alarm had gone off. Employees tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the fire that had started on the outside of the house. According to preliminary investigations, however, the flames subsequently spread to the thatched roof, the entire roof structure and the interior. About 120 firefighters, including the district manager, fought the flames, which were finally extinguished in the morning.
