A former student contacted The Beatles Story Museum anonymously and said he wanted to return the street sign stolen in the 1970s. Now it must be put on display.

“It’s great to see something of such importance finally returned to its rightful place after almost half a century,” Mayor Steve Rotheram said, according to PA. But Penny Lane is so much more than a street.

The true meaning of the song lies not in the street name or the sign, but in the scenes and characters that Paul McCartney remembered from his youth. “The nurse, the banker, the fireman and the hairdresser who brought the street to life – they are the true treasures of Penny Lane.”

The Beatles released the song in 1967. It was recorded in their studio on London’s Abbey Road, which has also become world famous. Several Penny Lane signs have since been stolen in Liverpool, PA wrote. McCartney also took to the streets when he drove around his hometown with host James Corden on “Carpool Karaoke” years ago.
