The number of people killed in floods that have persisted for weeks in several regions of Kenya rose to at least 120 on Tuesday, Raymond Omollo, the East African country’s interior minister, said at a disaster management meeting. In addition, people from nearly 90,000 households fled the floods and were housed in 120 makeshift camps. He did not provide information about the total number of people affected.
The flooding is the result of persistent rain associated with the El Niño weather phenomenon. As a result of the natural disaster, an early warning system must now be developed. The country previously suffered from drought.
Heavy rain also fell in neighboring Somalia. According to the UN, many people died and a large number of people fled their villages and towns because of the flooding. (sda/dpa)
