Surprising turnaround in the defamation proceedings against the musician Gil Ofarim: After a confession by the 41-year-old accused of false suspicion and defamation, the Leipzig Regional Court temporarily closed the proceedings on Tuesday. Ofarim admitted to fabricating accusations of anti-Semitism against a hotel employee.
The shutdown took place after an agreement was reached among those involved in the process. There is a sum of 10,000 euros attached, which Ofarim would have to pay to the Jewish community in Leipzig and the sponsoring association of the Wannsee Conference House. If the money is received within six months, the process will be stopped permanently.
“I deleted the video”
In a video shared on social networks on October 5, 2021, the musician stated that an employee of the Westin Hotel asked him to take off a necklace with a Star of David when he checked in. The video caused a sensation at the time. In his confession and apology on Tuesday, Ofarim said: “I deleted the video.”
The hotel manager, who appeared as co-plaintiff, accepted the apology in court. In justifying the termination of the proceedings, the Criminal Chamber stated that the main purpose of the trial was to reliably establish the facts of the case.
Effective rehabilitation
This has now become clear beyond any doubt based on witness statements and reports, as well as Ofarim’s confession. This means that all doubts and speculations are finally eliminated. Ofarim’s apology also rehabilitated the hotel manager more effectively than would have been possible through a verdict. (AFP/las)
