Fire hazard: A truck driver simply drove away while there was still an air conditioning sticker in front of the hood.

A truck driver (41) stormed out of his driver’s cab, dragged climate activists who were blocking the road to the other side and drove away, even though there were still people on the road in front of him. An activist was dragged a short distance. He almost ended up under the truck.

This scene, shot in Stralsund (D), caused outrage on social media on July 12. The action had consequences for the affected truck driver: Tobias H.* lost his job and driver’s license and had to pay a high fine.

Now the truck Rambo explains himself. “July 12 was the worst day of my life so far,” the 41-year-old told “Bild”.

Fine of 5400 euros

He wants to challenge his conviction for serious bodily harm and dangerous disruption of road traffic in court.

H. was sentenced to a fine of 5,400 euros for the action. In addition, a driver’s license will be revoked for one year. “We have appealed against the decision,” lawyer Dirk Lüder (53) told “Bild”.

“The stress was already great”

H. was under ‘significant time pressure’ at the time of the crime. «I transported gases for medical operations. Normally there are a maximum of twelve tours per day. There were fourteen that day.” H. delivered his cargo “accurately” to the hospitals. On July 12, doctors also asked during the trip where H. was.

“The stress was already great,” he reveals. Then he saw the two climate stickers 200 meters away. “That’s why I switched to the bus lane to get through quickly. But they noticed my maneuver and quickly blocked this path too – I had to slam on the brakes to avoid running over them,” says the German.

After that the German could no longer control himself. He first threatened the activists with a beating and then dragged them off the street. An activist then sat back down on the street and was hit by the truck. About this scene, H. says: “I didn’t notice that the activist had sat down on the street again. When passers-by pointed this out to me, I immediately stopped.”

Great solidarity

The court is now assessing whether the truck driver should have seen the activist. An expert has been engaged for this. It is still unclear which criteria he will take into account in his assessment.

The revocation of the driver’s license also applies to the 41-year-old’s private car. This should change after the upcoming court hearing. “We hope that my client will get his driver’s license back soon,” says lawyer Lüder.

In addition to the excitement on social media, Tobias H. also received expressions of solidarity. The encouraging words give the truck driver strength to continue. “I would like to thank all the supporters. Because believe me: I am not who the video shows me to be. On the contrary. I am sorry that the incident escalated on July 12.” (An)
