The former police officer who was sentenced to a long prison term for the murder of African-American George Floyd was attacked with a knife in prison and seriously injured. Several American media reported this on Friday evening (local time), citing people familiar with the matter. Derek Chauvin, the white former Minneapolis police officer, is in stable condition in a federal prison in the US state of Arizona after the attack.
In May 2020, George Floyd was killed during a brutal police operation in Minneapolis. Videos documented police officers pushing the unarmed man to the ground. White officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes as Floyd begged for him to breathe.
The case sparked nationwide protests against police brutality and racism. Chauvin was later sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for murder. A few days ago, the Supreme Court rejected Chauvin’s appeal. Chauvin had argued that he did not receive a fair trial.
The Department of Corrections also said an inmate was assaulted at the Tucson jail. According to sources at CNN and the New York Times, it was Chauvin. According to the authority, prison staff carried out life-saving measures. The treated person was then taken to a hospital. No employees were injured in the incident.
No further details were given about the inmate’s condition, but one of the people familiar with the incident said Chauvin survived the attack, according to The New York Times. (sda/dpa)
