Former police officer Derek Chauvin, 47, was stabbed and seriously injured by a fellow inmate while in custody. This is reported by the American media, citing prison authorities.
The white former police officer was sentenced in 2020 to a total of 43.5 years in prison for the murder of African-American George Floyd († 46). Now a fellow inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, stabbed him. The detention center is a medium-security prison reportedly plagued by security deficiencies and staffing shortages.
Chauvin’s lawyer warned
The U.S. Bureau of Prisons said the incident happened Friday at 12:30 p.m. Guards immediately carried out “life-saving measures”. Chauvin was taken to a local hospital with suspected serious stab wounds.
Chauvin’s attorney, Eric Nelson, wrote in court documents last year that his client should be kept away from other inmates.
Floyd became a symbol
Chauvin was sentenced to 21 years in federal prison for civil rights violations and 22.5 years in state prison for manslaughter. He will serve the prison sentences concurrently.
Floyd’s death sparked nationwide violent protests and the Black Lives Matter movement. For some in the US, Chauvin is seen as a pawn of the police. According to documentary material, Floyd, who was portrayed as a black civil rights activist, was a drug user with a troubled past who also trafficked.
The knife attack on Chauvin is the second such attack on a federal inmate in the past five months. In July, disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar, 60, was stabbed to death by a fellow inmate in a federal prison in Florida. (kes)
