The president-elect of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, he was sworn in this Thursday as head of state at the investiture ceremonyand in the National Assembly (Parliament) with which he took command and succeeded the outgoing ruler, Guillermo Lasso.
Together with his vice-president, Verónica Abad, Noboa thus became, at the age of 35, the youngest president in the history of Ecuador, whose reins he will take with the important challenges ahead, such as the unprecedented crisis of insecurity and criminal violence and “worrying” economic situation, as he defined himself in recent days.
Noboa was sworn in before the Speaker of the Assembly, Henry Kronfle, who later imposed on him the presidential ribbon given to him by Lasso.
With his inauguration, the son of banana sector magnate and five-time presidential candidate Álvaro Noboa begins a short term of only one and a half days in which he will complete the period 2021-2025. which Lasso terminated last May by applying the constitutional mechanism ‘crossed death’.
Using this tool, the president dissolved National Assemblywith an opposition majority, hold new general elections in which he did not run for re-election, and the eventual winner was Noboa, winning in a runoff held on October 15 over runner-up Luisa González.
He is also scheduled to sign the appointments of some of his ministers there, although Ecuador’s new president has already predicted that a full photo of his cabinet will not be available until at least Sunday.
So far, Noboa has not revealed who will be the ministers of the interior and national defense, departments directly involved in quelling the crisis of insecurity and organized crime violence.
Security, a present element
Noboa’s inauguration was attended by government representatives from other countries such as President of Colombia Gustavo Petro and Vice President of Brazil Geraldo Alckmin and Honduran Renato Florentino Pineda and former Colombian President Andrés Pastran.
The event took place under increased security measures around the National Assembly building, which was guarded by a large police and military contingent from the early hours of the morning, including snipers stationed on the roofs of the legislative power headquarters.
