Is that Banksy’s first name? An old interview from 2003 fuels speculation Shakira escapes from prison, but has to pay back millions

Did Banksy reveal his real name twenty years ago? In a 2003 BBC interview, which has since resurfaced, the presenter asked the mysterious street artist if he could use his name. He says yes – to which Banksy is asked: “Is it Robert Banks?” Answer: “It’s Robbie.”

As Bristol Live reported on Tuesday from Banksy’s western English birthplace, the artist Robin Gunningham, who many had believed to be Banksy for years, used the name Robin Banks. Robbie may be a nickname for Robin. The portal highlighted that Robbie could also refer to other identities, such as Robert Del Naja, artist and member of the band Massive Attack, from Bristol. Del Naja has also been seen as a possible Banksy for years.

The interview was conducted by then BBC culture correspondent Nigel Wrench. When the BBC published the podcast ‘The Banksy Story’, in which Banksy’s voice can be heard in a 2005 American radio interview, Wrench remembered the conversation, the public broadcaster reported on Tuesday. He found his entire interview on a minidisc at home – and the BBC added an episode to their actually completed podcast.

“I’m not here to apologize”

In the conversation, Banksy compared his approach to art to cooking. His mother prepared a roast every Sunday, the typical Sunday roast. It took a long time, but it was over quickly. Now she eats microwave meals and is happier. «I have transferred this approach to art in a certain way. I want it done.”

Banksy also denied allegations of vandalism. “I’m not here to apologize for it. It’s a quicker way to get your point across, right?” The artist emphasized, “Go away! Destroy things! Have fun!” Other people could repaint the work, he said. (sda/dpa)
