A Catholic bishop in France is under investigation for attempted rape. The bishop of La Rochelle in western France is accused of attempting to rape an adult man in a church setting 10 years ago, the public prosecutor’s office in Paris announced on Monday. The bishop (70), who had already been suspended by the church in the summer, was placed under judicial supervision and banned from contacting the alleged victim and witnesses. The church itself informed the Public Prosecution Service of the allegations against the pastor in May.
The French bishops’ conference said Monday that the charges were related to incidents that the bishop denies. The bishop has a legitimate right to the presumption of innocence. At the same time, the church expressed its concern for the person concerned and reiterated its confidence in the judiciary. (sda/dpa)
