Police at the Capitol in the US capital Washington arrested a man near the seat of parliament on Wednesday who was carrying several weapons in his van. The authorities have asked the population not to come near the location.

According to police, the 80-year-old from the US state of Georgia said he was in Washington to deliver documents to the Supreme Court, which is located near the Capitol. Police have arrested the man for possession of unregistered weapons.
Police officers had previously surrounded the van and cordoned off the area around the Capitol and Supreme Court. Weapons are prohibited on the Capitol grounds. According to the police, dozens are arrested every year for breaking the law. (con/sda/dpa)
