Images of damage to buildings, such as a partially collapsed roof at a shopping center in the port city of General Santos, were also visible on social media. There were initially no reports of casualties.

The earthquake’s epicenter was in the sea northwest of Sarangani Island, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said. It happened around 4 p.m. local time at a depth of about 72 kilometers. The island is located about 1,700 kilometers south of the capital Manila. There was no tsunami warning.

The island nation is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most geologically active zone on Earth. Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are common there. In 1990, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake caused severe destruction on the island of Luzon. More than 2,400 people died then.
