The well-known German journalist Hubert Seipel is said to have received several hundreds of thousands of euros in secret payments from Russia. This is reported by television channel ZDF.
Seipel is said to have received 600,000 euros in March 2018 thanks to a “sponsorship agreement”. The amount was intended for a book by the journalist about “the political landscape in the Russian Federation”. This was published in 2021 under the title “Putin’s power. Why Europe needs Russia».
The money came from a shell company. According to ZDF, Russian oligarch Alexei Mordashov is behind it. He is considered a confidant of Putin and has been on the US and European Union sanctions lists since February 2022.
Seipel worked for ZDF 15 years ago and later also for ARD. He also performed several times in Switzerland, especially in the French-speaking Swiss media. He repeatedly attracted attention with Russia-friendly statements.
