Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic on Monday introduced regional politician Ivan Anusic as the new defense minister. He is expected to succeed Mario Banozic, who fired Plenkovic on Saturday. According to the current state of affairs at the Public Prosecution Service, Banozic caused a fatal traffic accident.
Anusic currently holds the office of prefect of the Osijek-Baranja district in the east of the NATO country of Croatia. Like Plenkovic and Banozic, the 50-year-old belongs to the conservative Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). On Saturday, the head of government temporarily assigned the State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense, Zdravko Jakop, to manage official affairs at the head of the ministry.
Anusic’s appointment still needs to be confirmed by the Croatian parliament, which is considered a formality. Banozic collided with a van in his SUV early Saturday morning on a country road in eastern Croatia. The driver of the van was killed. Banozic is in hospital with serious injuries. (sda/dpa)
