Big surprise in Britain: David Cameron celebrates his comeback, refugee ship ‘Ocean Viking’ rescues 128 migrants in the Mediterranean

Conservative British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has appointed former Prime Minister David Cameron as the country’s foreign minister. He succeeds James Cleverly, who now takes over as British Home Secretary. This position became vacant because Suella Braverman angered the government with an interview and was therefore fired.

The details:

Former Prime Minister Cameron is making a comeback

Former British Prime Minister David Cameron is making his comeback: the government headquarters at 10 Downing Street announced that he had been appointed the new Foreign Secretary.

Cameron should therefore also be appointed to the British House of Lords. His return to government is a big surprise.

Cameron resigned as prime minister in 2016 after the British voted to leave the European Union in the referendum he organized. At the time, Cameron campaigned for his country to remain in the EU.

Suella Braverman goes, James Cleverly comes

According to British media, the controversial British Home Secretary Suella Braverman has been fired. Her post will be taken over by (former) Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, who will be replaced by Cameron.

The right-wing politician in Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s cabinet has repeatedly caused controversy recently. She accused the police, among other things, of being blind in the left eye and of tolerating law violations by pro-Palestinian demonstrators.

She published the allegations in a guest article in the Times without consulting the Prime Minister’s office, as a spokesman for Sunak confirmed last week. The move was therefore expected.

Braverman is considered a promising candidate for party leadership if, as expected, the Conservatives lose next year’s general election. The governing Conservatives are far behind the opposition Labor party in the polls. There was speculation that by criticizing the police and other right-wing populist statements, she wanted to position herself as a candidate for the right wing of the party and perhaps even deliberately ensure her expulsion.

Why now?

Sunak is fighting for his political survival despite dire polling and a general election scheduled for next year. A cabinet reshuffle had been expected for some time.
