Several people in Croatia suffered injuries after consuming Coca-Cola drinks. Now the Ministry of Health is responding.
According to authorities, a man (19) suffered serious burns on Saturday after drinking mineral water from the Austrian brand Römerquelle. The brand belongs to the Coca-Cola group in Austria. The man’s condition is now stable again.
But there are 34 other suspected cases. In two cases a direct link between poisoning and consumption of the drink was proven. “We don’t know the origins of these cases. What is unpleasant is that the number of diseases is increasing,” said Health Minister Vili Beroš.
Those affected are suspected of chemically induced mucosal damage. The people had consumed different drinks. Which one exactly was not disclosed. A case in Zagbreb has been traced back to a Coca-Cola drink. Police are investigating what led to the poisonings.
Major product recall
“We are aware of a case in Croatia related to the Römerquelle Emotion blueberry-pomegranate product in the 330 millimeter glass bottle,” Coca-Cola Austria told “Today”. “We hope for a quick and full recovery of the affected person. The authorities have the full support of our colleagues on the ground to investigate and resolve the matter,” the company continued.
Coca-Cola Croatia responded with a recall. Both two batches of glass bottles of Römerquelle and one batch of plastic bottles of “Coca-Cola Original Taste” (500 ml) were affected.
Croatia recommends tap water
However, initial analyzes of the Croatian drinks location showed that there was no contamination at the companies. The Croatian Ministry of Health, meanwhile, banned Coca-Cola from distribution “in the interest of public health and to protect people’s health.”
Health Minister Rajko Ostojić advises the population and tourists: “Drink the municipal tap water. This is great in Zagreb, in Dalmatia, on the coast, in Lika. If there’s one thing we have in Croatia, it’s great water.” (jwg)
