Vladimir Saldo, the Moscow-appointed regional administrative head of the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson, has been sentenced in absentia by a Ukrainian court to 15 years in prison.

According to the court, Saldo was found guilty on Wednesday of high treason, collaboration with the Russian occupiers and justifying the Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to the court decision published online, the verdict is not yet final and can be appealed according to the procedure established by law. Balances of assets should therefore be confiscated.

Vladimir Saldo was mayor of Kherson between 2002 and 2012. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2023, he has been a key figure in the Kremlin in the Russian-occupied part of the southern Ukrainian region of the same name. After the occupation of Kherson, Saldo was appointed by Moscow as head of the Russian military administration and subsequently as ‘acting governor’ of the region. (SDA)
