Due to the ongoing risk of flooding, 74 schools in northern France will remain closed on Thursday and Friday. After heavy rainfall, 192,000 people in the catchment area of the Aa, Hem, Liane and Canche rivers are affected by the threat of flooding, the Pas-de-Calais department announced on Wednesday evening. The orange warning level for severe weather applies on Thursday. Since the flooding began on Monday, firefighters have been deployed to 860 missions. 5,200 people were cut off from drinking water and helpers distributed bottled water. As a precaution, the electricity was turned off in 60 flooded houses.
As the weather service Météo France has announced, the persistent rain has also caused small rivers in northern France to overflow their banks. Over the past twenty days, three times as much rain as normal has fallen. The last time such an amount of rainfall was measured in the department at this time of year was 30 years ago. In some places, as much rain fell in six days as usual in all of November. Aerial photographs from the newspaper “La Voix du Nord” showed extensive flooded areas. (SDA)
