Resignation of UK Home Secretary, new blow to Prime Minister Truss
British Home Secretary Suella Braverman is stepping down from her post. This is reported by the British media, including the BBC. It is still unclear why she is stepping down from her ministerial post, but political analysts have linked this to unhappiness with Prime Minister Truss. According to them, Truss’s position as prime minister is hanging by a thread.
Dissatisfaction with the Prime Minister was also visible today in her own Conservative Party. Earlier in the day, fellow party member William Wragg of the influential 1922 Committee announced that he had filed a so-called “letter of no confidence” against the newly elected prime minister.
Truss himself unexpectedly canceled a work visit without giving a reason. According to observers, she will remain in London to try to save her position as Prime Minister.
pensions and taxes
The prime minister has come under fire several times in recent weeks, most recently because of pensions. Truss long refused to promise they would be adjusted for inflation. Today she made that pledge alongside her new Treasury Secretary, veteran Jeremy Hunt.
She also received a lot of criticism for her economic plans and especially for the tax cuts she wanted to push through for the highest incomes. She later gave up, but former finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng was fired over these plans. He was in office for a little over a month.
