Heavy storms also hit Tuscany on Sunday evening.

After the heavy storms in recent days, the central Italian region of Tuscany was again hit by heavy rain and storms on Sunday night. More than 16,000 households were without power and some 1,200 people in the area not far from Florence were evacuated as a precaution, the president of the popular holiday region, Eugenio Giani, 64, said in the morning. At least seven people have died as a result of the storms that have hit the area since Thursday evening.

The heavy storms mainly affected the provinces of Prato and Pistoia. The Bisenzio River and several smaller streams overflowed their banks, flooding entire towns. Meanwhile, cleanup efforts are underway in communities where water has already receded. «Our Tuscany is wounded, but we are already rebuilding. Forza!” Giani wrote in a Facebook post.

There were also problems in other northern and central Italian regions due to the storms. It rained and stormed heavily in Veneto, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Liguria. Videos showed the towns of the Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera in Liguria being hit by huge, high waves. According to media reports, in some places the water from the waves even penetrated into the historic city centers. In Venice, the flood gates (“Moses”) had to be expanded again to protect the lagoon city from flooding. (SDA)
