Heavy storms hit large parts of northern Italy on Tuesday night. The area around Milan was particularly affected.

As a result of the large amounts of water, the Seveso River overflowed its banks and the districts of Isola and Niguarda north of the center were flooded. Photos and videos showed people standing on the street up to their knees in water. Train stations were flooded and entire streets were flooded.

More than 170 fire brigade operations

There were no reports of injuries or deaths. According to authorities in Lombardy, rain, storms and thunderstorms will continue in the coming days. The northern Italian regions of Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Liguria and Trentino-South Tyrol were and are also affected. Civil protection yellow and orange warning levels apply in these regions. In some areas, schools remained closed for safety reasons.

The fire brigade has had to respond to many missions since early Tuesday morning. According to her own information, she carried out more than 170 missions in Lombardy. With the rain expected to continue, authorities are very concerned that more rivers will burst their banks or landslides could occur.

The emergency services are now taking precautions to limit the consequences of the storms. At Lake Como, which is popular with tourists and is also flooded by heavy rains, mobile barriers have been installed to prevent water from flowing into the city. (zis/SDA)
