At least eight people were killed and dozens injured when two trains collided in southern India on Sunday. This was announced to the Indian media by a manager of the railway division. The accident took place in Vizianagaram in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
According to information given by the divisional manager in the Times of India, a train hit a stationary train and four coaches derailed. Several rescue teams and residents tried to rescue injured passengers from the wreckage. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy ordered further relief measures.
According to the Times of India, the Indian East Coast Railway (ECoR) said human error and crossing the signal could have led to the collision.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office wrote on the online platform X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday evening that Modi had spoken to railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to get an overview. Modi expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the recovery of the injured.
Train accidents are common in India. Last June, one of the country’s worst train accidents occurred in the Indian state of Odisha, killing nearly 300 people and injuring more than 1,000. Many trains are old and some tracks need renovation. The Indian government has recently invested heavily in improving the railways, including in express trains.
