Derek R. is said to have shot his mother while she was sleeping.

Derek R.* (13) is said to have shot his mother Irene G.* (†39) – while she was lying next to her newborn sister. The New York Post reports this.

The crime took place in mid-October in Hialeah, Florida. After R. shot his mother, he took pictures and sent them to his friends, the newspaper reported. He also called the police to confess to the crime. He asked on the phone: “I took pictures and told my friends what I did. Is that bad?”

Derek R. initially told police he had a gun and a knife. He planned to commit suicide. “I wanted to commit suicide, but I couldn’t,” he reportedly said, according to the newspaper.

Father is stunned

According to the newspaper report, nothing happened to the newborn sister. The boy must now appear in court. In Florida, he will be treated as an adult in court, authorities said. If convicted, he faces the death penalty.

Father Jose R.* told the New York Post he was stunned. It is an ‘extreme tragedy’. His son Derek is actually “very peaceful. No one can imagine how something like this could happen,” says R..

Last Friday, Derek R.’s first hearing took place in court. According to the newspaper report, the boy himself was not present. Instead, he was represented by his father and grandmother. (zis)
