The images of Al-Jazeera reporter Wael Dahdouh (53) are shocking: he heard on camera that his family died in an explosion. These are his wife and two of his children.

As he receives the terrible news, only his voice can be heard. A little later he drives to the hospital where his deceased family is – broadcast live by “Al Jazeera”. The footage shows Dahdouh holding the bodies of his relatives in his arms in a hospital in Gaza.

“Aren’t you going to wake up too?”

As he cries and carries his dead child in his arms, countless people gather around the reporter. They record him with cell phones and cameras. He is also shown kneeling over one of the corpses and saying, “Aren’t you going to wake up too? They are taking revenge on me by attacking my children.” The reporter tries to calm down, visibly shaken.

His daughter Sham (†7), his son Mahmoud (†15) and his wife were killed in the attack. In an interview with his broadcaster, Dahdouh made serious accusations against the Israeli army: “It is a series of targeted attacks on children, women and civilians. I just reported on such an attack by Yarmouk.”

According to CNN, it cannot yet be independently confirmed that the explosion was caused by an Israeli attack.

Operation underway

Dahdouh said he had doubts that the Israeli army would let people go “without punishing them.” But that’s exactly what happened. Dahdouh says angrily: “This is the ‘safe’ area that the occupying army talked about.”

Some family members survived the bombing. During the night, helpers tried to rescue more people from the rubble. Dahdou’s son Yehia is seriously injured in the head and undergoes surgery. According to Al Jazeera, the operation had to be carried out in the hospital corridor. Because there were not enough medical supplies, his head wound had to be sutured with non-surgical thread. Dahdou’s grandson was also killed in the attack.

Dahdouh’s family lived in a refugee camp in Al-Nuseirat. It is located in the south of the Gaza Strip. As Al Jazeera reports, an Israeli plane reportedly attacked the family home. A statement from Israel is still pending. (mlm/neo)
