On October 17, 471 Palestinians were reported to have been killed in Gaza’s Al-Ahli hospital. This was announced by the Hamas-controlled health authority. Hamas accused the Israeli air force of bombing the hospital full of civilians seeking protection. Israel, meanwhile, claimed that a misdirected Hamas rocket hit the parking lot, causing an explosion.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) presented several pieces of evidence supporting their theory. For example, the crater left after the explosion is much smaller than from other attacks. Hamas has also not produced any ammunition residues that can be attributed to Israeli weapons. The IDF released a wiretapped telephone conversation of Hamas terrorists blaming Islamic Jihad for the explosion.
In addition, Israeli media have repeatedly cited a video accidentally recorded by Al Jazeera as evidence. The recording was made during a live broadcast. You should recognize the misguided Palestinian missile on it.
What does the video really show?
You can even see a rocket explode in the sky. Moments later a fire breaks out. U.S. intelligence officials said they determined the video showed a Palestinian rocket from the Gaza Strip sustaining damage before parts of the rocket hit the hospital grounds. The IDF also posted the video in connection with the hospital.
Analyzes by the New York Times came to a different conclusion. The rocket would not have been shot near Al-Ahli Hospital and therefore cannot prove that the rocket hit there. In fact, the missile would have hit more than two miles from the facility. Moreover, from the direction of flight it should be possible to judge that the rocket was fired by Israel and not by Gaza.
Missile detonated on video by Israel
The Al Jazeera video was compared with recordings from the Tel Aviv surveillance camera and recordings from the Israeli broadcaster Channel 12. Experts concluded that the rocket must have been fired near the Israeli city of Nahal Oz. So you can assume that the clip shows an Israeli missile – and not one from Hamas, as claimed.
The theory that the hospital explosion was caused by a misdirected Hamas rocket has not been refuted. It is estimated that 15 percent of rockets fired into the Gaza Strip fail. However, Al Jazeera’s video, which is supposed to show the explosion at Al-Ahli Hospital, is not proof. Even a week after the terrible explosion, it remains unclear how this could have happened.
