New setback for former US President Donald Trump in the trial for election interference in the state of Georgia: another co-defendant of Trump reached an agreement with the prosecutor in an Atlanta court on Tuesday and was found guilty of aiding and abetting false statements. Attorney Jenna Ellis said through tears, “If I had known then what I know now, I would have declined to represent Trump in these post-election lawsuits.”
She failed to fulfill her duty of care at the time. Ellis is now the fourth suspect in the case who is cooperating with the Public Prosecution Service.
Not the first admission of guilt
Trump’s then-supporters Kenneth Chesebro, Sidney Powell and Scott Hall had previously pleaded guilty to various crimes in Georgia. This means that they can also testify against co-suspects in the future. This is a great success for the Public Prosecution Service.
In Georgia, Trump was indicted along with 18 other defendants for his efforts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in the state. The Republican is also being charged at the federal level in a separate case for his efforts to subsequently overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Trump lost the election to Democrat Joe Biden, also in Georgia. But to this day he refuses to admit defeat. Ellis was part of the legal team that tried to overturn the election results in Trump’s favor. At the time, she appeared at press conferences alongside Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani.
He also faces charges in Georgia. Ellis recently publicly distanced himself from Trump. She also complained that Trump refused to pay her legal fees. The 38-year-old has now been sentenced to, among other things, a suspended prison sentence and community service. (sda/dpa)
