Former US President Donald Trump (77) embarrassed himself on Monday with a statement on camera. “There is a man, Viktor Orbán, have you heard of him?” Trump asks the crowd at a rally when speaking about the Hungarian president. “He is probably one of the most powerful leaders in the world. He is the head of Türkiye,” he continues. The crowd in New Hampshire, where Trump had registered to participate in the presidential primaries, applauds.
The president of Turkey is Recep Tayyip Erdogan (69). Viktor Orbán (60) is the Prime Minister of Hungary. But Trump does not notice his mistake and continues undeterred. And: it gets even more confusing.
Trump claims Orban has a “front” with Russia – but neither Hungary nor Turkey border the country.
Trump came to talk about Orban because he had recently said that Trump should become president of the US again. “Come back, Mr. President. Make America great again and bring us peace,” Orban said a few months ago.
Trump and Orbán support each other
The Republican has praised Orbán’s leadership style in Hungary several times in the past. Trump, on the other hand, does not have the best relationship with Erdogan.
‘Don’t act like the tough guy. Don’t be a fool!” Trump wrote in a letter to the Turkish president in 2019, shortly before Turkey launched an offensive against the YPG militia in northern Syria. Trump, who was still president at the time, threatened severe sanctions.
There are currently several criminal proceedings against Trump. He is accused of inciting violence in the 2020 presidential election. He also inflated the assets. Trump still wants to become president in 2024. He claims there is a political motive behind his impeachment. (jwg)
