More than forty US states have sued Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, for endangering the health of children and young people. “Meta uses powerful and unprecedented technologies to attract and entrap children and teens for profit,” says the lawsuit filed Tuesday in California.

The states accuse the company of designing its online services “in a manipulative way, so that children become dependent and at the same time lose their self-esteem.” “The mental health of children and youth is reaching negative records, and online services are also to blame,” New York State Attorney General Letitia James points out.

“Manipulative tactics”

Meta is said to have misled users about the “significant dangers” of its online services to maximize its profits. The company exploited young people because its business model assumes that they spend as much time as possible on the platforms, even though this is harmful to their health. The lawsuit calls on the Federal Court to force Meta to stop using “manipulative tactics” and pay a large fine and damages.

Meta was “disappointed” by the lawsuit. “We share the attorneys general’s commitment to providing young people with safe and positive online experiences,” the company said, pointing to “more than 30 actions to support young people and their families.” (AFP)
