“Rest in peace my friend. Thank you for letting me meet you, the oldest dog in the world,” the owner of a pet photo studio in Lisbon wrote on Facebook last night. “What a wonderful life you have had.”
That is why the animal photo studio, together with many others, says goodbye to Bobi. The purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo was awarded the Guinness World Record as the oldest dog in the world in February. The Portuguese breed is mainly used as a livestock guard dog.
“He was a fighter all those years.”
The dog was born in 1992 and spent his entire life on a farm in Portugal. Bobi celebrated his 31st birthday on May 11, the Daily Mail reports. The owner, Leonel Costa, organized a big party in the village of Conqueiros to mark the occasion. More than 100 guests participated and ate local fish and meat together with Bobi. Bobi ate the same food as humans.
Costa was only eight years old when the family dog was born. About his faithful companion, he told the British newspaper: “He was a fighter all those years, only he knows how he got through it. That couldn’t have been easy, because the average life expectancy of a dog is not very long.”
Normally dogs have a life expectancy of 10 to 13 years – Bobi was considerably older. His age has been confirmed by his veterinarian and a pet database recognized by the Portuguese government.
Bobi is recognized on Facebook
Bobi’s owner attributes the animal’s longevity to a calm and peaceful environment, feeding on human food and its freedom. “We are so grateful that even after more than 30 years, Bobi is still part of our daily lives,” Costa said at the birthday party in May. He has not yet commented on the death of his protégé.
People express their condolences on Facebook. Karen Becker, a veterinarian and author, paid tribute to the late dog in a late-night post: “Is there ever enough time? I don’t believe it.” She was also at the party five months earlier.
“Although he outlived every dog in history, his 11,478 days on earth were never enough for those who loved him,” Becker continues. “Good luck, Bobi. You have taught the world everything you had to teach it.” (gs)
