A well-known Russian guest on television who mainly spread Putin propaganda has apparently gone too far. What Yevgeny Satanovsky said in his most recent appearance cost him his job as a commentator.

The scientist, who is actually an expert on the Middle East, called Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marija Zakharova a heavy-drinking anti-Semite in an interview on YouTube, the American magazine ‘Newsweek’ reported. He described Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov as a “hopeless drunkard.” During his time as a diplomat in Egypt, Satanowski claimed he “drank like there was no tomorrow.”

There was an immediate response from the state broadcaster Russia-1, where Satanowski was a guest. He was fired, said Vladimir Soloviev, one of the well-known moderators there, in a post on the X platform (formerly Twitter). He had repeatedly invited Satanowski to his show.

Satanowski’s comments were unfair and inadmissible, the moderator said. He insulted two respected diplomats and the Russian Foreign Ministry. Soloviev also said he had stopped communicating with the scientist and apologized to Russian leaders and the two people affected for his behavior. There was initially no official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Yevgeny Satanowski has often been noted in the past for his pithy words, but especially in praise of Vladimir Putin. A year ago he described the Kremlin boss as the “Emperor of all Russia” and placed him on a par with the tsars. When Russia was blamed for an attack on a dam in Ukraine in June, he railed against the West and the United States. He threatened that Russia would wipe out Washington.
