After an alleged confrontation with moral guardians, a 16-year-old Iranian girl is apparently brain dead, according to a media report. As the Iranian news agency Tasnim reported on Sunday, despite their efforts, doctors now assume that the young Iranian Armita Garawand is brain dead.

The case of the 16-year-old student caused great outrage in early October. According to reports from human rights activists, the young woman violently clashed with moral guardians on a subway train because she was not wearing a headscarf. She has been in a coma for weeks. State media denied the violence of the moral police. Garawand fell and hit his head due to low blood pressure, the official statement said.

Garawand’s fate reminds many Iranians of the case of the young Iranian Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by moral watchdogs in the fall of 2022 for an allegedly ill-fitting headscarf. Amini fell into a coma and died. Her death last year sparked the worst protests in decades. Since then, many women have demonstratively ignored the obligation to wear a headscarf.
