Last year, violent storms raged across Corsica.

Tragic discovery Friday morning in Corsica: The coast guard discovered two dead campers in the town of Sagone. According to the Public Prosecution Service, these are two Swiss. “They died 24 hours ago while heavy thunderstorms raged across the region,” prosecutor Nicolas Septe told local broadcaster France 3 Regions. The authorities therefore assume that the two campers were struck by lightning. However, the exact circumstances are still unclear.

Last year, heavy storms hit the region. At the time, a 13-year-old girl died when a tree fell on her bungalow at Le Sagone campsite in the west of the island. Authorities say a 72-year-old woman was killed when the roof of a blown-away cabin fell on her vehicle. In Calvi, a 46-year-old French tourist died when a tree fell on a bungalow. A fisherman and a kayaker also died in the sea off Corsica. (jmh/AFP)
